Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD)
The ECCD programme addresses the needs of children aged 0 – 8 years. The programme is divided into three components covering 3 age brackets as follows;
- 0-3 years where the key component is maternal, child health and parenting education – with some emphasis on health and nutrition ,. This programme targets parents, both mother and father of the child and, where possible, and caretakers. Save the children collaborates with parents to regularly providethe facilitation for caregivers, Working with other partners, government and communities SC creates a platform and sometimes means to increase access to quality early childhood services. Such services include activities that stimulate children’s development, information about nutrition, hygiene and immunisation, de-worming, vitamin A supplementation, growth monitoring, family planning, parenting etc living with HIV, and others.
- 4-6 years promote child development through cognitive, social – emotional, physical and language development. School readiness activities and promoting smooth transition to primary education. SC works with parents/community to support the creation of child friendly spaces (shelter, sanitation facilities, developing locally made learning and play materials/facilities, child days, child led activities, trainings for center management committees and for caregivers on child development, protection, child rights and child friendly approaches to stimulate development.
- 7-8 years. Creating child friendly schools/quality learning environment for children to enroll and stay in school. This involves caregivers of ECCD programs carrying out collective activities/meetings to support smooth transition. In the effort to promote holistic develop for children and enable them reach their full potential our strategic intent is to increasingly promote an integrated/multi-sectoral approach.
